Enhancing Competency and Strengthening Safety: A Case Study with Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) Ships Delivery Teams

Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) Ships Delivery Teams operate in a complex industry where safety and competence are of utmost importance. In this case study, we explore how Sagentia Aviation’s, formerly Osprey, training solution addressed the challenge faced by DE&S in developing and introducing an Air Traffic Management Equipment (ATME) foundation training course. By enhancing competency and ensuring compliance with Ministry of Defence (MOD) regulations, Sagentia Aviation played a pivotal role in strengthening safety measures within the organisation.

Problem/Challenge

DE&S Ships Delivery Teams recognised the need for a comprehensive ATME training course to equip their personnel with the essential ATM safety knowledge and skills for effective procurement and through-life management. The challenge lay in developing a course that addressed the specific pain points and obstacles faced by the teams, ensuring a thorough understanding of ATME hazards and risks.

Solution

Sagentia Aviation responded to DE&S’s challenge by creating a tailored training package designed to enhance the competency of their Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP). With a team consisting of former MAA ATME Certification Lead, Sagentia Aviation brought extensive experience and expertise in achieving successful ATME certification, including working with the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers. This unique feature of Sagentia Aviation’s offering ensured the delivery of a specialised course that met the specific requirements of DE&S Ships Delivery Teams.

The training solution was implemented through a series of six one-day courses. Osprey’s experienced trainers delivered the courses, providing participants with in-depth knowledge and practical insights into MOD regulations, their application, and the effective in-service management of ATME.

Results

The completion of the training course empowered DE&S SQEP to develop a strong understanding of MOD ATME regulations and their practical application. Participants reported significant improvements in their ability to define ATME tasks and activities, as well as a genuine comprehension of the importance of complying with MOD ATME regulations. The successful completion of the course elevated participants’ competency to the level of Supervised Practitioner.

Conclusion

The success of the initial three courses led to a significant demand for additional training sessions, with a total of six courses delivered to date. DE&S Ships Delivery Teams benefitted from Sagentia Aviation’s expertise and the tailored training package, which enhanced competency, strengthened safety measures, and ensured compliance with MOD regulations. This case study highlights the importance of specialised training in complex industries such as defence, emphasising the positive impact it can have on enhancing performance and ensuring the highest standards of safety.

Lessons learned from this collaboration include the value of working with experienced trainers who possess specific industry knowledge and the importance of customised training to address unique challenges. Sagentia Aviation’s successful work with DE&S Ships Delivery Teams serves as a testament to their commitment to excellence and their ability to deliver effective solutions in the aerospace and defence sector.
