Developing and prototyping a high voltage lamp for ROVs

Voltage

Our client asked:

Our client has a prototype lamp for a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) system that functions with analogue controls but wanted to develop a high-voltage version with Ethernet control

The project story:

  • The power cable for the lamp prototype was too large, so doubling the voltage would reduce the current
  • Our client wanted two A-Model prototypes to perform pressure testing and integration testing on the ROV
  • Sagentia Innovation designed the high-voltage system and progressively refined it in close collaboration with the client, went through bring-up, resolving multiple electronic issues with the original design, reworked the electronics, and iterated the design of a new PCB
  • EMC tested the PCBs to assess the performance of the system
  • Developed the software which handled thermal limiting, Ethernet and PWM controls for the lamp
  • Built up and delivered two A-Model prototypes, one fully potted and one partially assembled so that the client’s software team could modify the firmware

Client benefit:

  • Sagentia Innovation supplied a fully assembled and potted high-voltage lamp, one partially assembled high-voltage lamp with no potting, and all the mechanical, electronic, and software designs for the A-Model
  • Our team also produced a report to ensure that the new knowledge generated throughout the project was consistently captured and transferred to the client’s team
