Enabling dishwashers to sense the load to optimise cycle efficiency
Our client asked:
Dishwashers typically have no means of adjusting a program according to the characteristics of the load. Our client wanted to enhance the energy efficiency of its dishwashers, specifically by identifying a technology able to quantify the load to optimise the wash and dry cycle.
The project story:
- Sagentia Innovation (SI) was tasked with developing and embedding a system to determine the ratio of glass, ceramic, and plastic in a dishwasher’s load
- Cost constraints eliminated the opportunity to use optical or camera-based technology
- SI determined that acoustic signature analysis (from the water striking the load) and image analysis (glint analysis) could achieve the desired functionality for an acceptable cost
- SI developed prototype electronics and on-device algorithms to validate the approach to a level of maturity sufficient for the client to be comfortable completing the product development
Results: deliverables and outcomes
The client received prototype electronics and on-device algorithms to validate the approach to a level of maturity sufficient for the client to be comfortable completing the product development.
The client is now developing a dishwasher which will be class-leading in terms of its energy efficiency.
