Technology roadmap: fibre optic sensing

Our client asked:

Our client, an international oil company, needed support in reaching internal alignment on the value that distributed fibre optic (FO) sensing could bring and define of an integrated technology roadmap.

The project story:

  • The roadmap was informed by a state-of-the-art (SOTA) review of FO sensing applications spanning across
  • Reservoir monitoring: active seismic (surface and borehole), passive seismic (surface and borehole), well production monitoring, and slow strain monitoring
  • Non-reservoir monitoring: pipeline monitoring, offshore wind cable monitoring, wind blade monitoring, and biodiversity
  • The SOTA review tracked key innovation activities and players and innovation trends
  • As part of the SOTA the competitive position of our clients against their peers and market leaders was assessed in terms of level of adoption and drive to develop technologies
  • We subsequently worked in close collaboration with the client to identify areas where they could conduct R&D to materially impact their business
  • For each of the areas we developed, through a series of workshops with key R&D and business reps, roadmaps capturing key activities and costs

Results: deliverables and outcomes

Our analysis helped disseminate, across our client’s organisation, a perspective of the level of maturity of FO technologies and the value they could unlock. The views on where the company sits relative to competitors provided input in the definition of areas to be prioritised for innovation activities.

Building on this awareness, we developed collectively owned roadmaps that ensured internal alignment and renewed clarity on direction for key R&D activities. The client used our deliverables to provide senior management a perspective funding requirements
