Understanding the regulatory implications for GLP-1 support foods

From a regulatory perspective, GLP-1 support foods sit in largely unchartered territory. Existing frameworks for foods and supplements were not designed with these products in mind. As a result, authorities across key markets are increasingly scrutinising how such products should be classified, how far positioning can go, and whether current rules adequately address emerging product formats and claims.

Global regulatory diversity is already emerging

One of the defining features of this category is the lack of global harmonisation. Regulatory treatment of GLP-1 support foods varies significantly between markets, creating complexity for companies operating internationally:

  • EU/UK – Explicit references to GLP-1 are not permitted, and weight management claims remain tightly controlled within specific regulated categories such as meal replacements
  • Japan/Brazil – Limited GLP-1 claims may be possible via specialist/health channels; however approval is not guaranteed and first-movers face high risk
  • USA/Australia & New Zealand/India – There may be limited scope to reference GLP-1 through self-substantiated claims, but this carries increased compliance risk

For global brands, aligning product positioning, claims and labelling strategies across these differing frameworks will be a key challenge.
