In light of the recent Strategic Defence Review (SDR), which sets out a bold vision for the UK to become a leading tech-enabled defence power by 2035, the importance of cross-sector collaboration has never been clearer. With the SDR emphasising innovation at wartime pace, deeper integration with industry, and a whole-of-society approach to defence, our latest blog explores how harnessing expertise from across science, engineering, and technology sectors can enhance defence insights and accelerate capability development in this new era of strategic transformation.
In the rapidly evolving landscape of defence, staying ahead of emerging threats requires more than just traditional approaches. The complexity and speed of technological advancements necessitate a broader perspective and deeper expertise. This is where cross-sector collaboration becomes crucial.

The Power of Collaboration

Blending defence sector knowledge with wider science, engineering, and technology capabilities is fundamental to success. Defence leaders are increasingly looking beyond generation after next (GAN) timeframes, aiming to pinpoint new developments that hold promise for defence applications. This involves analysing future technologies, some of which originate in different sectors, and driving the maturation of those that show potential.

Case Study: Dstl’s Defence Science and Technology Futures Programme

The UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) exemplifies this by taking the approach  with a scoping exercise for its Defence Science and Technology Futures (DSTF) Programme. Sagentia Defence led a consortium of six companies to identify and investigate emerging areas with game-changing potential for 15 beyond-GAN defence concepts. With expert input from scientists and engineers in relevant fields, new ideas were quickly developed and matured for detailed consideration by defence leaders.
