With greater emphasis being placed on health, safety, and environmental aspects of antimicrobial products, regulators are eager to ensure consumers can make properly informed choices. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Design for the Environment (DfE) certification aims to facilitate this. Allowable in Canada, and echoing elements of the European Union’s (EU) Safe and Sustainable by Design framework, DfE is now a pillar of global regulatory strategy, responding to increased consumer interest in sustainable options.

Consumers can be confident that disinfectants and sanitizers bearing the DfE logo meet stringent EPA criteria across five categories: human health, the environment, ingredients, performance, and packaging. DfE is part of EPA’s well-known Safer Choice program. Providing evidence to satisfy all the requirements is not easy, and some company leaders are reluctant to undertake the arduous application process. Nevertheless, three key benefits make DfE certification a worthwhile investment of time, energy, and budget.

Read on to find out the three key reasons to invest in Design for the Environment certification.
