Canada Food Inspection Agency modernizes its Fertilizer Regulations

October 26, 2020

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently updated its Fertilizer Regulations to help modernize requirements and provide more flexibility to the industry. These changes begin a three-year transitionary period where industry can choose to comply with either the old or updated regulations on a product by product basis. The combination of provisions from the old and new regulations, however, is strictly prohibited. This approach allows for the exhaustion of existing stock in the supply chain and to minimize the costs associated with the new regulatory requirements.

The updates to requirements offer a more risk-based approach for safety of Canadians and the environment. Some of the changes to regulations include:

  1. Labelling must include both English and French
  2. Addition of definitions for micronutrient, active ingredient, and secondary nutrient
  3. A five-year registration period
  4. Personal use fertilizer importation exemption removed

The changes to Fertilizer Regulations will come into full effect in November 2023.
